Yeah, it's weird to see even Bill get weirded out by the idea that the government wants a drug scourge, he's a pretty liberal guy. But even if you don't believe in that (which is wrong, but the norm opinion) there are still certain facts that are considered true by the public. Like LSD was originally developed by the government, or that marijuana was originally encouraged to be grown by the government. Bottom line, where there's smoke there's fire. The government has been known to lie about drugs for years, so to take your version of the truth from them is the opposite of wise.

QUOTE(KevinBooth @ Apr 5 2008, 12:42 PM) *

I wonder how many people remember Bill Maher's famous routine that got him fired from ABC -

"Who is the real coward ? when the United States is launching missiles from floating Iron Islands 200 miles away"

Remember when that guy had balls? It seems sometimes that he is about as ready to tow the conservative line as Dennis Miller has. He has exhibited this kind of dismissive behavior before, especially in reference to subjects like controlled demolitions in the WTC bombing. Who is the real coward? Indeed. Bill Maher is so afraid that they'll take his show away and it's obvious. Reminds me of that old Hicks bit with Jay Leno getting it in the behind from Satan while he hawks Doritos. He might just be off of the artistic roll-call.

He doesn't mind being edgy when it comes to things like race though. No danger in that. Blacks and Latinos don't sign his paychecks.

It's easy to have balls when you've got nothing to lose, as Bill does with anti-Bush statements. I don't know, I think you can dismiss the guy simply due to his hush-hush about ADW. Either he was trying to distance himself from the issue or was acting in self-preservation, both which are acceptable (with limits). If everyone here at SC are to actively promote ideas that aren't exactly considered "mainstream", then we must at first understand not everybody's going to actively embrace these thoughts the first discussion around. And say what you will about the truth of the matter, the idea that drugs are actively encouraged by the government is not popular. It's true, of course, but that doesn't factor into public perception.

I just don't like the public dismissal of Bill just because of his refusal to address one issue, that's all. Truth be told there's a huge difference between Bill Hicks and Jay Leno. One sold his soul for a small spotlight that only showed his insecurities tenfold, and the other is Jay Leno. Ha! No, but you get my point, there's a big difference between poo-pooing an issue and being a company whore. Don't get hung up just because Bill doesn't agree with you on everything.

Truth be told I’m a huge Bill Maher fan. I watch his show religiously every week & I often tell people during interviews that if Bill H. were still alive he would be doing something along the lines of Jon Stewart or Bill Maher. So in all honesty I‘m totally honored they even mentioned it. I just thought I needed to bitch to try to get his attention.

Oh I know, I was responding more to JtheFK's remarks. I wish the issues like those presented in ADW were expressed more in shows like Real Time, but I understand why they aren't. It's perfectly understandable that somebody with a show on HBO would hold back praise for a Showtime documentary (does that sound as bad as it seems to me? I don't even think that's the whole reason). Just because Bill gets to swear doesn't mean he's free to say what he wants, almost everyone's got a boss to answer too.
